Frequently asked questions
The details are in your agreements — but here is how the programme actually works, in plain language.
How can I own a bike in South Africa as a foreigner?+
South African law requires vehicles to be registered to a South African resident or entity, so as a visitor you cannot register one in your own name. MBB solves this by registering the bike in its name as your agent and bare nominee — you pay for it, you are the beneficial owner at all times, and the proceeds when it sells belong to you. MBB holds the paperwork; the bike is yours.
Can I buy before I arrive?+
Yes — that is the pre-arrival track. You pay in full, we hold the bike securely at our premises, and a storage subscription of R990/month applies from payment until you collect. While in storage the bike is our responsibility: any damage to it is on us, and it is kept in its purchase condition. On collection day your subscription switches automatically to the tier you chose.
What do I need to ride legally?+
A valid passport, an International Driving Permit (mandatory for handover), and to be 18 or older. Your passport must be valid at least 6 months beyond your departure date. We verify the originals on collection day before the bike is handed over.
What does the price include?+
Your quote shows one all-in bike price, the on-road fee (registration, roadworthy, licence disc, plates), and — if we are holding the bike pre-arrival — the storage fee. Insurance is billed separately at cost, with no markup, and the exact premium is confirmed before collection. The quote in your dashboard is the binding figure.
What are the subscription tiers?+
Essential (R1,990/month) covers registration, licensing, roadworthy management, insurance facilitation at cost, the GPS security tracker, and a 6-month mechanical warranty. Premium (R3,990/month) adds AA Advantage+ roadside assistance, a loan bike while yours is in for a covered repair, the 24/7 WhatsApp emergency line, and a priority workshop queue. Overland Max (R9,500/month) adds live GPS data access, a Garmin inReach with Tracks4Africa maps, a monthly hour with a professional guide, and a private Overland Max rider community. You can change tier on 30 days’ notice. The cross-border letter of authority is a separate R500 once-off add-on you can take on any tier.
How does the guaranteed buyback work?+
Near the end of your stay we begin the buyback: an inspection, a condition rating, and deductions only for damage beyond fair wear and tear. Your offer lands in your dashboard and stays open for 48 hours. Accept, and the payout goes to the account you provided — targeted within 3–5 business days. A pre-agreed depreciation schedule signed at purchase provides the month-by-month reference frame, and the final offer reflects the bike’s real condition and market value.
Is there a GPS tracker on the bike?+
Yes — every MBB bike carries one from collection day. It is MBB’s device, used for security, stolen-vehicle recovery, and cross-border compliance only — never to monitor your personal movements, and the data is never sold. On Overland Max you also get live access to your own tracker data for navigation. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Can I cross borders?+
Yes — Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia are the usual route list. Each crossing needs MBB’s prior approval (a WhatsApp message; we respond within 24 hours) and must be to a country pre-listed on your file. The letter of authority that border posts ask for is a R500 once-off add-on, available on any tier — you no longer need to be on Premium to get one.
What about insurance?+
Comprehensive insurance is mandatory from collection day. We arrange a per-client, per-vehicle policy on your behalf and pass it through at cost, no markup. It is your policy — you carry the excess on a claim. During pre-arrival storage insurance is not needed, because the bike is in our custody and on our liability.
What if the bike breaks down?+
Message us on WhatsApp immediately — it is our primary support channel. In the first six months from collection the 6-month mechanical warranty covers you, on every tier. Premium and Overland Max add AA Advantage+ roadside assistance and a loan bike while yours is in for a covered repair. Every incident is logged on your file with its resolution.
How long can I keep the bike?+
The registration cycle runs 12 months from your purchase date, regardless of when you collect. The minimum subscription is one calendar month. Want to stay past 12 months? Renewal is possible — we remind you at least 30 days before expiry, and new agreements are signed before it lapses.
How do I pay?+
In ZAR: card via Peach Payments’ secure checkout, SWIFT bank transfer, or Wise. Cash on arrival and cryptocurrency are not accepted. Card details never touch our servers.
Can I leave early?+
Yes. Give written notice, return the bike in agreed condition, and we sell it through the normal buyback process — you receive the proceeds less permitted deductions, plus a pro-rata refund of unused subscription fees (after the first full month). Storage fees already rendered are not refundable.
Where are you located?+
Two locations in Johannesburg (JHB-1 and JHB-2) and one in Cape Town, plus a dealer network for sourcing. Collection happens at the MBB location holding your bike — exact address confirmed when your collection day is set.
